In our family, this is one of the drinks I like to make when I want something refreshing, especially during Singapore’s hot and humid weather. I used to prepare it whenever my boy had a fever or when I had a feeling that he was about to fall sick.
You may be wondering, how did I know he was about to fall sick? Hahaha! A doctor might need a thermometer to check for a fever, but as a SAHM (stay-at-home mom), sometimes all it takes is one look at my boy’s face for my mommy instincts to kick in! 😄 Of course, a thermometer is still the best way to check whether he has a fever.
For a simple everyday cooling drink, I usually leave out the honeysuckle. Chrysanthemum flowers, wolfberries and a little rock sugar or honey are all I need for a light, refreshing drink.

A little tip when using honeysuckle: Don’t add too much! It has a strong flavour and can make the drink taste bitter if you use too much. In traditional Chinese food culture, honeysuckle is often considered a “cooling” ingredient, so I prefer to use it sparingly.
I recently discovered that Chinese tonic shops in Singapore sell pre-packed chrysanthemum and honeysuckle. That’s certainly convenient, but honestly, this drink is so easy to prepare from scratch that I don’t really see the need to buy a pre-packed version. Just get the ingredients separately, adjust the proportions to your liking, and you’re good to go!
A simple homemade drink, a little wisdom passed down from Mom, and a refreshing treat to enjoy at home. Sometimes, the simplest recipes are the best!
Note: This is a traditional homemade beverage, not a treatment for fever or illness. If your child has a fever or seems unwell, check their temperature and seek medical advice when appropriate.
1 Cup Chrysanthemum flower 菊花
(Get the one for boiling, not the flower bud for tea.)
About 1 tbsp Honey Suckle 金银花
2 tbsp Wolfberry 枸杞
1pc Licorice root 甘草
Honey Rock Sugar to taste 石蜂糖(or rock sugar)
1 Honey Dates (optional, I only add this when my boy coughs)
3.5 Cup Water (room temperature)
